Quiet Time With Your Own Thoughts

One of the hardest things to do in our busy, over-scheduled world is simply to be alone with our own thoughts. We are constantly connected, constantly entertained, and constantly distracted. Silence has become the enemy, and yet, it is in that silence that we find clarity and peace in a world that is full of distractions.

I’m not even talking about meditation here - I’m simply talking about something like standing in a line up without pulling your phone out as a distraction. Or sitting down with a cup of coffee in your favorite chair to enjoy some quiet time without anything else turned on. It's about intentionally making space - even just ten minutes a day - where you put away the phone, turn off the television, and sit in the quiet with your thoughts. For some of us, this can be a very scary thing to do because we are so used to the constant distraction that we don’t even know how to sit in the quiet anymore. 

I find that having some quiet time is vital for my mental and emotional health. Although I often avoid the quiet reflection, I know that it helps me to process my life and work through all the things that are happening. By giving myself this time, I allow myself to unpack the mental baggage that I carry from day to day. If I don’t unpack it, the baggage continues to pile up!

You may find that when you start, your thoughts are chaotic and overwhelming. That's okay. Think of it like decluttering a messy room. The initial phase is messy, but as you consistently practice, the space clears, and you begin to see things clearly. This quiet introspection helps you gain perspective on your life.

Make a commitment today to schedule a few moments of solitude. Whether it’s while walking, before bed, or sitting with a cup of coffee, allow your thoughts to just be. It’s a simple, free practice that yields huge returns in peace.

Spending time in quiet solitude—free from the presence of others as well as from our screens, devices, and other distractions—is becoming more and more challenging in this day and age, with a multitude of distractions only ever an arms-length away. But that doesn’t make it any less important.

Quiet solitude can offer many psychological benefits that can significantly enhance mental well-being. For example, engaging in periods of silence can help us clear our minds, leading to improved concentration and productivity when returning to work.

In addition, by minimizing external distractions, we can focus more effectively on the tasks that are important to us, fostering creativity and facilitating problem-solving. This mental clarity not only aids in decision-making but also contributes to a greater sense of personal fulfillment.

Quiet solitude, such as meditation or walks in nature, also boosts creativity. Research shows that it helps us know ourselves more deeply: It’s amazing what you can learn about yourself when you spend time with your own mind. It also facilitates information processing, giving the mind space to take in and integrate what it’s been exposed to.

It can be difficult for many of us to make the time and space for solitude–spending time in meditation, walking in nature without listening to anything, etc. We often have busy lives, and it’s so easy to fill the time we do have with input from all the sources we have on hand. But time in quiet solitude can be invaluable in nurturing our relationship with ourselves as well as replenishing us for when we return to the rest of our lives. It’s undoubtedly an investment worth making.
