Birthday Celebrations

It’s my husband’s birthday today, and after having been married for many years it can be easy to just make it “another birthday.” But this year I am working on being better at celebrating life’s moments.

Life can be hard with seasons of ups and downs and it’s important to remember to celebrate the moments that matter. A birthday is a special day (whether you like birthdays or not haha) because it’s the day that you were born. That’s a day worth celebrating.

We aren’t doing anything huge, but intentionally taking time to acknowledge and appreciate the special moments.

I am cooking my husband’s favorite dinner and then we will probably go out for dessert. Our kids are currently 4 and 6 so including them in the celebration is important too. They wanted to decorate the house because at 4 and 6, that’s the most important thing to do! We went to the dollar store and bought some streamers and balloons and turned our living room into a birthday zone.

The kids had fun decorating and there’s something so special about the excitement that children bring to celebrations. They see it all as magical, which brings a sense of magic to it for the adults too.

If you’ve been with the same person for a long time, it can be easy to just glaze over a birthday. Especially in the busyness of life. Just don’t let all the little moments of celebration pass you by, because life is short.

Quote of the day

“People of our time are losing the power of celebration. Instead of celebrating we seek to be amused or entertained. Celebration is an active state, an act of expressing reverence or appreciation. To be entertained is a passive state--it is to receive pleasure afforded by an amusing act or a spectacle.... Celebration is a confrontation, giving attention to the transcendent meaning of one's actions.” ― Abraham Joshua Heschel
