The Social Security System (SSS) is a government-managed social insurance program in the Philippines that provides financial protection and benefits to its members during times of need such as sickness, maternity benefits, disability, unemployment, retirement, and death. It was created under Republic Act No. 8282, also known as the Social Security Act of 1997, and is now governed by Republic Act No. 11199, or the Social Security Act of 2018.
The SSS operates under the supervision of the Department of Finance (DOF) and is managed by a Social Security Commission (SSC) that formulates policies and ensures the sustainability of the fund.
Purpose of SSS
The main purpose of SSS is to promote social justice and provide financial security to Filipino workers by offering various benefits that serve as protection against the loss of income due to life’s uncertainties such as old age, disability, sickness, or death.
