INDIRA GANDHI MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL, also known as Himachal Pradesh Medical College, is located in the snow-covered area of Lakkar Bazaar, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. Its motto is “May all be happy, May all be disease-free.” It was established in 1966. In 1984, Himachal Pradesh Medical College [HPMC] was renamed Indira Gandhi Medical College [IGMC].
History of Indira Gandhi Medical College
The area of Indira Gandhi Medical College was a dense forest. The transformation of Shimla has been started after 1816. Most of the Britishers moved to Shimla due to the cold and soothing climate. On the land of IGMC British quarters were built. By the increasing demand of medical support, British Government built slauten hospital in 1881. After the independence the slauten hospital is converted into a medical institute in 1966, named as Himachal Pradesh Medical College.
