Boxing Week

Is boxing week draining your already drained bank account?

It is so easy to get sucked into the deals. I keep seeing “girl math” videos all over social media - as in “it’s 40% off which means that I’ve basically MADE money to buy it!”

Unfortunately, our bank accounts don’t operate on girl math. It would sure be nice if they did.

The thing is, you CAN get some awesome deals this week. But it’s important to make sure you can actually afford to buy it! I like to plan and budget my spending. There are a few items that I have planned to buy during boxing week (a new TV for one!). That way when I head to the store, I know how much money I have to spend and can then look for the best deal given my budget.

I also like to have a bit of money set aside for those more impulsive purchases. It’s the worst when you see something that you want or need AND it’s the best price you’ve seen but you don’t have the room in your budget for it.

I know that a lot of people do not operate on a budget because it feels constricting. However, I always feel that being in debt is very constricting (been there, done that, don’t need to do it again!). It causes me a lot of stress to be in debt, so I would rather manage my money and use a budget. That way I can allocate money to different things and know that I have cash on hand to pay for them!

That’s really the moral of the story here today - don’t let boxing week be an excuse to go further into debt buying more things that you don’t really need!

Written by John Mason Neale and first published in 1853, the lyrics celebrate the spirit of Boxing Day—generosity—as it describes King Wenceslas watching a poor man “gath’ring winter fuel.” The king then brings the peasant food and logs for his fire.

How Is Boxing Day Celebrated Today?

Today, Boxing Day is a day off in England and Canada, and just a day to relax after the festivities of Christmas.

There’s no feast. It’s all about the leftovers! Think turkey sandwiches.  See turkey leftover recipes.

And perhaps a little drink. Here’s our recipe for Champagne Mimosa.

Sporting events have taken place on Boxing Day for centuries. Today’s more popular Boxing Day sporting activities include watching horse races and football matches against local rivals.

Of course, another “sport” is post-Christmas shopping, as folks do their exchanges and returns and look for the best deals. See our ideas on what to do with those Amazon cardboard boxes!

Charity and giving to the poor are still a big part of Boxing Day.  Some folks participate in charity runs. The Boxing Day Dip is another charity event where people in fancy dress swim in the sea on Boxing Day. Can you imagine swimming in the frigid English Channel?
