Finding Strength To Heal

Revisiting a traumatic past is just that - traumatizing. I believe that is why so many people struggle to find the strength to heal and move forward with their lives.

While I’m not a therapist, it seems to me that the ironic part about it is that it’s incredibly hard to deal with the past, but it’s even more damaging NOT to address it and learn to move forward. Both paths are incredibly painful and difficult; however, one path (hopefully) provides you with a way forward and new skills to manage your future in a more positive way. The other path just leaves you with unresolved issues that inevitably impact future events.

Many years ago I worked alongside a Psychologist with 40 years of experience to develop a mental wellness course. This course focused primarily on people with PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The goal was to provide people with information and resiliency skills. It was never intended to replace the work of a mental health professional, but rather a supplemental course to do while in therapy.

We also really hoped for caregivers and spouses to be able to take the course so they could have a solid understanding of PTSD.

As a team, we worked with numerous people who were struggling to find the strength to heal and move forward. You might never be “healed” from trauma, but you can learn to live a meaningful and purposeful life even with a traumatic past. It’s all about learning how to be resilient and to bounce back from adversity with better coping skills.

There are so many proven coping strategies out there for people who are struggling with some kind of traumatic past - many are very simple things that you can learn and practise anywhere and anytime.

If you are reading this and wondering how to find the strength to heal from your past, I want to encourage you that it is possible! Will it be challenging? Yes! Will it be worth it? Absolutely 🙂

Interesting Fact #1

The reality is that you will never be the same person you were before whatever happened that you are healing from. That can feel scary, but that can also feel incredibly freeing as you attempt to find yourself and experience post-traumatic growth.

Interesting Fact #2

After you've gone through something painful, difficult, traumatic, or life-changing, it's essential to heal your mind as much as your body. The emotional healing process takes time, and it looks different for each person.

Interesting Fact #3

Emotional healing is the process of acknowledging, allowing, accepting, integrating, and processing painful life experiences and strong emotions. It may involve empathy, self-regulation, self-compassion, self-acceptance, mindfulness, and integration.

Life often unfolds in unexpected ways. For me, it began as a journey on the periphery, always feeling like an outsider looking in. In my search for belonging, I turned to spirituality and yoga, not just as practices but as sanctuaries for my restless soul. These disciplines became my compass in the wilderness of life, guiding me towards self-discovery and inner peace. They taught me that even as an outsider, I could find a home within myself.

However, as I delved deeper, I saw the shadow side of these communities. Issues like abuse of power, sexual misconduct, and a glaring failure to protect members lurked beneath the surface of serene smiles and tranquil teachings. It was a sobering realization that even in spaces designed for enlightenment, human flaws and societal ills persist.

In the journey through life's wilderness, every step you take towards self-discovery and inner peace is a testament to your resilience and the strength within you to overcome and thrive.

The hardest blow came when a revered leader's misconduct came to light. What followed was not a swift act of justice but a disheartening silence and inaction. This disillusionment was profound, shaking the very foundations of my belief in the community I once held sacred. It was a betrayal that cut deeper than any outsider's loneliness.

In the wake of this turmoil, my journey took an inward turn towards healing. The process was arduous, filled with introspection and the slow untangling of pain. Forgiveness was not about excusing those who wronged me or others but about freeing myself from the grip of perpetual hurt. It was a path towards reclaiming my peace.

This experience led me to critically examine the student-teacher dynamic in spiritual settings. The potential for abuse and manipulation is real, often masked under the guise of spiritual enlightenment. Recognizing these dynamics is crucial, not only for personal safeguarding but also for advocating for healthier, more transparent community structures.

Despite these challenges, my story, like many others, is one of resilience and recovery. It's about finding strength in vulnerability, learning from pain, and gradually rebuilding trust in a healthier spiritual community. This journey, filled with emotional turmoil, ultimately reinforces the indomitable spirit of the human heart.

Throughout this journey, I've navigated through a spectrum of emotions - humiliation, shame, rage, grief, and depression. Sharing these isn't a sign of weakness but a testament to the complex emotional landscape we all traverse. By acknowledging and expressing these feelings, we pave the way for deeper understanding, connection, and healing.

I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to stand in the face of disillusionment, especially when it stems from communities and leaders we once held in high esteem. You see, the journey through spirituality and personal growth is not just about the heights we can reach, but also about navigating the valleys of our own disillusionment and pain. I understand how betrayal can shatter trust and dim the light of hope. But here's what I've learned: within these moments of darkness lies the potent seed of resilience. Your strength is not defined by an unbroken series of successes, but by your ability to rise each time life pushes you down. It's in these testing times that your spirit learns to soar beyond the shadows of betrayal, to find a new dawn of understanding and forgiveness.
