- Face the person when speaking
Make sure the individual can see your face and read your lips when you are talking to them. Be in the same room with the individual because calling out from a different room makes it hard to hear.
- When initiating a conversation, give them a heads up
Call out their names before you start talking to them. By saying their name, you will be informing them that the following statement is directed at them or they need to be part of the conversation.
- Don’t shout or yell
Some people believe that when you shout or yell at someone, they will get to hear what you are saying. This is not the case. Shouting distorts the words and can also be perceived as rude. Instead of shouting and yelling, rephrase your statement or write it down.
- Inform them if they missed something
As you communicate with someone with hearing loss, you will realise that they ask for clarity by repeating the statement. Therefore if they miss something, inform them. Also, correct them if they misunderstood a statement.
- Rephrase
If the person you are talking to doesn’t understand what you just said, rephrase it for them instead of repeating the same thing.
- Reduce background noise
When speaking to your loved one with hearing loss, reduce background noise. For example, turn down the TV or radio volume to make it easier for them to listen to you.
- Speak naturally
Speaking too slowly and exaggerating mouth movements will make an individual feel patronised, and the interaction will be uncomfortable. Also, speaking too fast will lead to miscommunication. Hence speak clearly.
- Be patient and understanding
Have patience and avoid getting upset when the person asks you to repeat something you already said.
- Sign language and other methods of communicating
You can learn sign language for both of you to be able to communicate. Also, use texting and emails as part of your communication.
